Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max

Apple's iPhone 17 Pro Max is the phone the iPhone 15 Pro Max should have been: thermally competent under sustained load, dramatically longer-lasting on battery, and finally fitted with a telephoto lens that justifies the "Pro" label at the long end. After three generations of titanium frames and incremental camera tweaks, Apple has switched to a heat-forged aluminium unibody — counter-intuitive on paper, since titanium grades higher on a spec sheet, but Apple's argument is that aluminium dissipates heat faster, and the vapour chamber underneath the A19 Pro confirms it: this is the first Pro Max that doesn't throttle inside ten minutes of 4K ProRes recording or a heavy gaming session.

In India the launch line-up is straightforward — 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB — in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver, sold via Amazon.in, Apple's own store, Croma and Reliance Digital. Amazon.in's ₹1,49,900 sticker for the 256 GB variant matches Apple's MRP exactly, but bank offers and 12-month no-cost EMI on Amazon Pay ICICI, HDFC and SBI cards routinely shave ₹6,000-₹10,000 off the effective price during sale events. AppleCare+ in India runs at ₹15,900 for two years and remains the only practical accidental damage cover in the country.

We spent two weeks with the 256 GB Deep Blue review unit and benchmarked it against the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the Pixel 10 Pro XL and our long-term iPhone 15 Pro Max. This review covers what genuinely changed, what Apple still gets wrong, and exactly when an upgrade makes sense for an Indian buyer.

The single biggest physical change is the move from a titanium mid-frame to a heat-forged aluminium unibody. The back is no longer a single sheet of textured glass — it's now a contoured aluminium plateau that houses the camera island and runs into the side rails as one continuous piece, with a smaller pane of Ceramic Shield-protected glass for the MagSafe wireless charging window. The result feels denser and warmer in hand than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and noticeably more thermally responsive: heat from the A19 Pro spreads into the entire chassis instead of pooling around the camera bump.

Dimensions remain close to the previous generation at 6.9 inches diagonal (17.42 cm) on the front, but the device gains a fraction of a millimetre in thickness to accommodate the larger battery and the new vapour chamber. Weight is up versus the titanium iPhone 16 Pro Max, and you feel it on long single-handed scroll sessions — this is firmly a two-hand phone. Apple has also strengthened the front and back glass: Ceramic Shield 2 on the front offers 3x better scratch resistance per Apple, and a new Ceramic Shield back is rated 4x more crack-resistant than the iPhone 16 Pro Max's glass back. IP68 rating is unchanged at 6 metres for 30 minutes.

The Indian retail box is austere. You get the iPhone 17 Pro Max, a USB-C to USB-C charge cable, a SIM ejector tool (yes, in India the device still ships with a physical nano-SIM tray plus eSIM support — the US-only eSIM-only configuration has not been brought to India in 2026), and Apple paperwork. There is no charger, no EarPods and no 3.5 mm adapter. You will need to bring your own 30W USB-PD charger to hit the advertised 50% in 20 minutes, and a MagSafe puck if you want fast wireless. The Action Button and Camera Control button from the iPhone 16 Pro generation both return unchanged.

The A19 Pro is, by a wide margin, the fastest chip ever shipped in a phone in 2026. In Geekbench 6 single-core our review unit landed in the high 3,800s with multi-core touching the 9,500-9,700 range — comfortably ahead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 10 Pro XL on raw CPU. GPU lead in 3DMark Solar Bay (ray-tracing) is even larger. But the more important number is sustained performance: in our 20-minute Genshin Impact loop at max settings the A19 Pro held within roughly 12 percent of peak frame rate, where the iPhone 16 Pro Max dropped closer to 30 percent over the same run. Vapour cooling and the aluminium chassis are doing real work here.

Real-world this translates to two things you can feel. First, sustained 4K ProRes video recording no longer triggers thermal throttling within five to seven minutes the way it did on the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro Max — we shot 22 minutes of 4K60 ProRes Log without an overheating warning at 32 °C ambient. Second, on-device Apple Intelligence operations (image generation, summarisation, Genmoji) complete noticeably faster. PUBG Mobile and BGMI run pinned at 90 fps in Smooth + Extreme; Real Racing 3 holds 120 fps. We saw no regression in any iOS 26 animation.

Battery life is the standout improvement. Apple's 37-hour video playback claim translated to roughly 9 hours 30 minutes of screen-on time per charge in our heavy mixed-use day (camera, navigation in Mumbai traffic, an hour of gaming, two hours of YouTube, the rest social and messaging). That's the longest we've recorded on any iPhone, and it beats the Galaxy S26 Ultra by roughly an hour in matched conditions. With moderate use we comfortably crossed two days. Charging: 50% in 20 minutes with a 30W or higher USB-PD adapter, full charge in roughly 90 minutes. MagSafe wired tops out at 25W with the new Apple-certified pucks; Qi2 wireless caps at 15W.

The camera system is where the "Pro" badge finally earns its keep. All three rear cameras are now 48MP sensors — main, ultra-wide and the new tetraprism telephoto with 8x optical-quality zoom (200mm equivalent), the longest zoom Apple has ever shipped. Image quality at 8x is noticeably ahead of the iPhone 16 Pro Max's 5x telephoto; detail at 25x digital remains usable for Instagram and reels but visibly behind the Galaxy S26 Ultra's 200MP sensor cropped at the same focal length. The new 18MP Center Stage front camera is the bigger story for everyday users — it auto-rotates to landscape framing for group selfies even when you hold the phone vertically, and Dual Capture lets you record front and rear video simultaneously, which is genuinely useful for vlogs and reaction content. ProRes Log gamma, ProRAW at full 48MP and Cinematic mode at 4K60 Dolby Vision are all retained.

Connectivity moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, with 5G sub-6 supported on all major Indian networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi). eSIM works flawlessly on Jio and Airtel; Vi eSIM activation in India still requires a store visit at the time of writing. The display is Apple's 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion 120Hz, peak HDR brightness measured at over 2,200 nits in our outdoor reading test in Bengaluru noon sun — among the brightest phone screens in 2026.
